The power of positive intentions

Intention is the starting point for everything. It’s the fire that ignites all of your goals, from you career to your health to your relationships.

Here are 5 ways you can make friends with your intentions and get them working for you.

1) Get meditating

We know, we know – you’ve heard this one before. But that’s because meditation works and we’ve now got the science to back it up. Start with just 10 minutes each morning. Sit comfortably, with good posture, and follow your breath in and out, just breathe naturally. Each time you notice that you are thinking, gently bring your concentration back to the breath. Each time you bring yourself back to the breath, think of it like doing a squat or lunge. It’s like a workout for your brain. And in no time, you will notice the results. Like when that co-worker starts pushing your buttons; instead of getting angry and reacting in a way you might regret, you will respond calmly and thoughtfully. Meditation is the foundation of positive intention.

2) Be grateful

Too often we become so fixated on what we don’t have that we forget to count our blessings. Take time to reflect on all the things you are grateful for and write them in a journal. And don’t forget to express thanks for anyone who does something nice for you. Even a simple thank-you note can make someone feel loved and cultivate a feeling of thankfulness. You’ll be amazed at how much more positive you feel.

3) Stop the negative self-talk

Positive intention starts with how you treat yourself. Be nice to yourself, be kind and gentle. Don’t believe everything you think and have a sense of humor about it. When those negative voices in your head start chattering, it’s time to re-frame your thinking. Lean into “I can’t do this,” or “I’m not good enough,” get curious about why your mind keeps repeating these messages and help it to understand that there are other, more positive messages. Each time you notice the negative and turn it into a positive you are retraining your mind to be happier and more positive.

4) Practice empathy

Ever heard of the phrase, “positivity breeds positivity?” It’s true. Practicing empathy allows us to communicate better, be kinder and also to be a positive force in the world. Try to listen to people without interrupting, disagreeing or planning what you’re going to say next. Smile a lot, laugh often, and above all, be compassionate with others. Approach people with warmth and aim to make at least one person smile every day.

5) Take care of your body

Let’s be honest. When you feel physically crummy, it impacts your mood – big time. Feeling positive begins with having a strong and healthy body, so keep the good vibes flowing (inside and out!) by exercising regularly, eating healthy foods and hydrating mindfully.
